The Heritage Minutes are a collection of bilingual Canadian 60-second short films, each depicting a significant person, event or story in Canadian history. First released in 1991, they have been shown on television, in cinemas, and online, and have become a part of Canadian culture.

I was part of the team that wrote this Heritage Minute, released in February 2019, about the Vancouver Asahi.

From 1914-1941, the Vancouver Asahi were one of city’s most dominant amateur baseball teams, winning multiple league titles in Vancouver and along the Northwest Coast. In 1942, after Canada declared war on Japan, 22,000 Japanese Canadians were interned in the interior of BC, including the Asahi players.

synopsis

Armed with a camera and a rubber cow mask, photographer Sujatro Ghosh meets women across the country including Hindus, Muslims and victims of violence in an attempt to answer an absurd question: Is it safer to be a cow than a woman in India?

Holy Cow is a 52' documentary that explores two parallel narratives dominating India today: while a woman is raped every 15 minutes with little to no consequence, fringe groups of Hindu vigilantes are attacking Muslims to protect their “Mother Cow”.

The story is told through the lens of Sujatro, who has been travelling the country taking photos of women wearing cow masks in public, as a way to highlight the absurdity of the situation.

Holy Cow is a documentary in production with Morada Films for the Al Jazeera Documentary Network. It is set for release in 2019.
